    JANUARY 2012 TRAVEL UPDATE

    Thaipusam Festival
The Hindu Festival of Thaipusam is much more than just a religious festival. The ritual body piercing that is part of it has to be witnessed to be believed. Extreme worshippers will get their bodies pierced in a trance like state with skewers and hooks through cheeks and tongues. Some will take it to another level by doing the 3-kilometre walk from Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple on Serangoon road in
Little India to Sri Thandayuthapani Temple on Tank road, by carrying portable shrines and other heavy objects as well as pulling heavy chariots fastened to metal hooks stuck into their backs as a form of kavadi (burdens), and as a show of devotion to god Murugan. The festival takes place annually under a full moon and usually in the month of January or February. Exact dates through Singapore’s Tourist Centers here or call the tourist hotline +65 6736-2000.

    Chinese New Year Festival
By far Singapore’s most important festival; lasting for up to two months. Visitors to Singapore will smell incense; see small altars all over the Lion City as Singaporean Chinese make offerings to the gods.
Chinatown is the place to see and be seen with numerous fairs, performances, and special events being set up marking this all important festival. Preparations for the festival start early, mid January, and last till March. This year, Feb 3 and 4 are the official Chinese new year public holidays in Singapore. Attractions e.g. Sentosa Island, Orchard Rd malls can get a little overcrowded then.

    Hong Bao River Festival
This annual fair held for a week and located by the waterfront in the Marina Bay area, offers exciting programmes full of activities to celebrate the new Chinese zodiac symbol for the coming year. A host of nightly cultural performances can be enjoyed then; the floating platform situated next to the Esplanade Theatres at Marina Bay, Boat and Clarke Quay, and of course
Chinatown, all come highly recommended for a fantastic time. Thrown in the mix are colouful arts, crafts, palm reading, Chinese riddle-guessing, calligraphy and lots more. This festival is held 21 through 29 January 2012.

    Sentosa Flower Festival
Yearly flower extravanganza and exciting entertainment on
Sentosa Island @ Sentosa Boardwalk, Imbiah, Merlion Plaza. Not to be missed. Exact dates of the event to be announced.

    FEBRUARY 2012 TRAVEL UPDATE

    Sentosa Flower Festival

Sentosa Island @ Sentosa Boardwalk, Imbiah, Merlion Plaza. Not to be missed – January / February. For more: 736-8672 .

    Harvest Festival

    Chinese New Year Festival
By far Singapore’s most important festival lasting for up to fifteen days and held in the month of February. Visitors to Singapore will smell incense and see small altars all over the Lion City as Singaporean Chinese make offerings to the gods. Family reunion dinners are the norm also. During Chinese New Year, in Singapore, it’s good fortune to bring a pair of mandarins when visiting the home of a friend who may reciprocate with “Hong Baos” which is money wrapped in red paper packets. Singapore’s
Chinatown is the place to see and be seen with numerous fairs and special events being set up marking this all important festival. Firecrackers are set off – lots of noise, lots of fun!

    Chingay Festival
What started off as nothing more than a small neighborhood parade has today grown into Singapore’s biggest parade to coincide with Chinese New Year festivities in February. Everything from Brasil-like samba dancing to acrobats strutting their stuff right in front of your eyes. The downside? The parade isn’t free to watch. And, since certain performances by dancers and acrobats are on certain designated spots at the promenade only, the ones that will truly enjoy this spectacle are paying guests; 11-12 February this year. The tourist information hotline: +65 6736-2000.
